Because it’s Friday: “Human Fountains” by Human Fountains

There are times when I try to pick something for a Friday that is artistic and fabulous, other times I pick something that makes me laugh.

This video by Human Fountains made me laugh, it’s wonderfully gloriously pointlessly daft.

You need to listen with the soundtrack:

Because it’s Friday: “ALIVE | Canada 4K” by Flo Nick

I love lakes and mountains, I’m also a big fine of time-lapse so this video of Canada is, for me, a winner.

I travelled 5500 km in six weeks exploring the vast landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, always looking to place my camera gear in the most beautiful sceneries possible.

With 54.000 single photos shot along the way I created ALIVE – a timelapse film which takes you on a vivid journey through wild forests, along the shores of crystal lakes and up the hills of massive mountains.

Flo has also done an impressive film of Iceland called Eylanda.

Because it’s Friday: Tilt Shift Kayakers

Apply some tilt-shift and a bit of time-shift to drone footage of kayakers and what do you get? A seemingly miniature word of water and mad drops over waterfalls and through whitewater.

For people from the UK, the music will probably remind you of something else:

Because it’s Friday: “Structure: A Microscopic Landscape in 4k” by Drew Geraci

The ordinary things around us are extraordinary especially when we get in close.

This video shows the world of ordinary organic things like Kiwi, Strawberry, Blueberry ad Garlic at 1000x magnification:

It all started with a single shot – a small frozen snowflake I captured using a 100mm macro lens. I’ve shot plenty of macro photography in the past, but for some reason this image ignited my imagination and passion to shoot. So I did what any sane person would do — bought a microscope with camera capabilities and I started to shoot every day objects at 1000x+ magnifications.

It was like a whole new world for me. I ran out to the grocery store and picked up as many different and unique looking organic foods I could find so I could capture them up-close and personal

Because it’s Friday: MAPfrappe – how big is that?

Have you ever wondered how big California is compared to Italy? Or perhaps you’ve wondered about the size of the parks in central London compared to Central Park in New York? Windermere compared to Loch Lomond? Or even Australia to the Sahara Desert? That’s where MAPfrappe comes in.

It’s a really simple interface one side is a map where you can draw around the feature that you want to compare, on the right is a map where you can align the outline you created with the feature you want to compare it with. What could be simpler?

There’s also a set of examples, if you click on the eye icon in the top right-hand corner.

Be warned though, you could spend hours doing this.

Windermere v Loch Lomond?

California v Italy?

St. James and Hyde Park in London v Central Park in New York?

Australia v the Sahara Desert?

Because it’s Friday: “Home Alone” Soundtrack Mashup [Acapella]

Watching Home Alone is, for us, a tradition at Christmas, made even more wonderful by the John Williams sound track.

Mike Tompkins has taken that sound track and done a multi layer a capella version – with just his voice:

Because it’s Friday: Transient – capturing lightening in slow-motion

Lightening is synonymous with speed, but what happens when you capture it at 1,000 frames a second and then slow it down. That’s what Dustin Farrell this summer.

The resulting film is fascinating:

Because it’s Friday: “Obsession” by OK Go

OK Go have always produced ingenious music videos, and their latest one is no exception.

This time they are using a matrix of 567 printers to provide an animated backdrop, combined with time lapse techniques. The result is fascinating, and a huge pile of paper.

Because it’s Friday: “Fake Apple Store” by Improv Everywhere

The folks at Improv Everywhere decided that as the iconic glass cube Apple Store on 5th Avenue, NY was closed for refurbishment they would open another one – using a subway elevator.

They even created a queue of people waiting to get the new iPhone X, people love to join a queue:

Because it’s Friday: An Alphabet of Brands

Designer Vinicius Araújo has created an Alphabet of Brands which renders each letter, using a Helvetica form, in the style of an electronics brand that represents that letter.

  • B for Beats
  • D for Dell
  • J for JBL
  • X for Xerox
  • you get the idea..

It’s amazing how evident the aesthetic styles are in these beautifully done renditions.

Watch out for a few animations as well.
