Because it’s Friday: What’s in a word?

I hated English at school, I’m not really sure why. It took me into my late teens before I enjoyed any reading or writing.

Chipping Vale after the stormBut I have never got over my incredulity at the inconsistencies of the language.

Words fascinate me though.

A project, currently underway, called The Mysteries of Vernacular seeks to explain the wonders of words through animation. There are only a few words at the moment, but  they are being added all the time. Who knew that the word hearse had been through such a journey? Or that clue started with a word for a ball of string?
