"Sometimes you have to write to figure it out"

I’ve been writing a series on this blog for over 5 months now. This has to be the longest I’ve ever taken to write nine posts!

The obvious answer to this lack of productivity is that I’ve been too busy to write; this would be a lie.

Another obvious answer would be that I’ve been spending so long crafting these marvellous posts that it’s just taken that long to get them finished; this would also be a deceit.

The reality is that I’ve been struggling with defining what it is I am going to write about in each of the posts. Various ideas have been going around my head, getting to a level of conception and then leaving in a disgruntled huff having been told that they weren’t good enough. Each new idea being reviewed and assessed until it was found wanting.

This is a new experience for me, I don’t normally work that way. My usual operation is to start writing, see where I get to, review and then publish.

I didn’t realise that there was this contrast in working until just now when I watched this video (below) of Daniel Pink giving the 2014 Weinberg College Convocation Address.

That’s why this has taken so long:  I’ve been planning too much and writing too little. Rather than writing to figure it out, I’ve been trying to figure out what to write.

It’s time to switch back and to get the final two posts done.
