Feeling a little older – ZX Spectrum makes 25

Jimmy and Grandad riding lowToday marks the 25th anniversary of the ZX Spectrum.

When I was at school I did most of my ‘O’ levels on a trusty ZX Spectrum, printing it out on a thermal printer and then sticking the bits of metallic paper to some real paper so the teachers could read it.

Knowing it is 25 years old makes me feel that little bit older .

Knowing that I have 2GB in my USB memory stick doesn’t make me too nostalgic for the days of fussy micro-tapes, but knowing how much we managed to do in 48KB does make me wonder whether we have used all of these extra circuits to their full potential.

  1. I must get myself into my dad’s loft and hunt out the old spectrum, bbc master and apple IIc, in fact I think there is also an Amstrad 1512 there! But it amazes me how much things have changed. I still remember coding with the spectrum and having to figure our which key had the command you wanted to use and then the other keys to press to get the command to come up!

  2. 25 years eh. Just as a celbration I have loaded up a Speccy emulator and typed in a few lines of ZX Basic, I even remebembered which keys the keywords were on; how sad.
I even loaded up Jetpac, complete with all the wiggly lines and the sound. How things have changed. It also amazes me how quickly we get used to the speed and capacity of new technology. How many of todays kids would sit at their screen fast forwarding through a C90 cassette to find Jet Set Willy eh?
